A Real Vineyard...

The last time we met, I showed you the progress of the
grapevine.  After several years, it put on fruit.

We harvested.  All THREE bunches.

We ate a few of them.  But, they are really wine grapes, not table grapes.
Pretty acidy....if that's a word.

But, on last Sunday, we went to a private tour of a real vineyard.

Five years ago, when we moved here, we joined the wine club at

It's just down the road a bit.  And, we like wine.
We agreed to take a quarterly 'shipment' of three bottles of wine.
A hardship, I know.  But, we did it.

They have a 'Pick-Up Party' each time, so locals...or any member who wants to...
can come to the winery and pick up their 'shipment'.
Entertainment and some snacks and wine.
Another hardship....lol

We recently received an invitation to take a complementary tour of the vineyard,
followed by a box lunch....and, of course, wine.

It just so happened to occur on the hottest day we've had all summer.
But, it was worth it.

Gary Elliot, owner and wine maker, led the tour.
He knows his stuff....and, loves his job.

He talked about planting, pruning and the watering,
that goes into growing wine grapes in Texas.

There are new acres, recently planted, but doing well.
The watering is done with drip emitters.

Drops fall on each side of the vine.
It takes a bit of water.  Right now, they're taking it out of a creek that
flows through the property.
Soon, it may have to come from wells, which makes it harder, because
of the calcium in the water that clogs the emitters.

sangiovese

Grapes 'mist' themselves, through their leaves, especially when the nights stay warm.
This uses even more water.

cabernet

The welcome rains we've had this spring have certainly helped.

viognier

I asked about the later freeze we had this spring.
Gary said he has giant fans (sorry, I didn't get a photo), that he uses to
blow the cold air up away from the ground.
It must have worked.

We gathered under the shade of a Live Oak grove, and had our box lunches
of Muffaletta sandwiches, fruit salad, chips and cookies.

photo quality due to bad focus, not too much wine

And, of course, some Longhorn Red.

By the way....we told Gary about our grapevine.
He said we're the first ones he's heard that got one to live,
much less make fruit.
We must have done something special.

Well...we planted and watered it.
Not all that special.  But, it worked.

Have a great weekend, and...

The Grape Update....

Back in May, I told you how excited we were that
the grapevine we planted a few years ago was finally
putting on some fruit.

We had buds.

The blooms.

 Then, little baby grapes.

Just last week, they were beginning to turn color.

Now this week, they're ripe.

The birds have left them alone.  We've tasted a couple.
They're a bit tart, but taste good.

We're taking a private vineyard tour this weekend,
at Driftwood Estate Winery.
We'll be asking questions.

Maybe next year, we'll have even more grapes.

So much enjoyment, from ONE grapevine...LOL

Gardeners are indeed a breed apart.

Have a great weekend.

Excited...

You might not get as excited as we have,
about something like this.

Some gardeners, though, will totally understand.

A few years ago...2011...we went on the
with some dear friends.

We did eleven wineries on the first day.
Two on the second day....for obvious reasons.

Each couple...I thought it should be EACH TICKET...received
a bare root grapevine.

We were the ones who had a garden.  So, we planted both.
Only one made it.

It did well.
Had nice leaves.  No grapes.

We finally pruned it, early this year.
And, these showed up.
Cute, huh?

These are the buds.

These are the blooms.
So cool!

Hopefully, those little green things will turn into grapes.

We'll never have a 'vineyard' to overlook,
like we do at Driftwood Estate Winery,
when we pick up our wine.

But, we're still excited to maybe have the chance for some grapes.

I'll keep you posted.

April....Already?....

We moved out of March.

March was busy, here.

Beautiful days.
Which means....no rain.

Glad to have plants that can handle some dry.

We enjoyed a visit to the winery, to pick up our 'shipment'.
If you join Driftwood Estate Winery's Spur Club,
you promise to buy a package of wine, every quarter.
Tough job....but, someone has to do it.

Miss Maggie made it to the beauty parlor.
We found a new groomer, and we really like her.
A dog needs to look good, when she's chasing squirrels.

We had a visit from these guys, again.
Another deer down.

We took a break from cleaning up, pruning back, and hauling rocks, dirt, and mulch,
to meet up with some friends, in Mississippi.

And, came home to more work.

Leaves!
Lots and lots of leaves.

The Live Oaks dropped most of their leaves, while we were gone.

So, raking and hauling ensued.
With more to come.

The weatherman says we have a good chance for rain, this weekend.
I sure hope he's right, this time.

So, I'll be donning my Spring fashions,
and getting more work done in the garden.

A garden is never 'done'.

Happy Friday....

And....Happy March 1st.

OK...I know you've heard me say this time and time again, but...
where does the time go?

Today dawned clear and cold....in fact, 24F cold.

I showed you another moon, just like the one above,
a month ago, today.

We had a full week....

We had a sunset party, at Driftwood Estate Winery.

The night before, a sad thing happened in Wimberley.
The Ace Hardware burned down.

A complete loss.  Nobody was hurt.
But, thirty-four people will be out of work, for a while.

We have Longhorn Baseball tickets.
So, we took in some games.
Do you know there are thirty-one home games?

Nice car, in the parking lot.

We had a very windy Monday.  Gusts up to 55 mph, here.
Now....lots of clean-up.

Thankfully, those winds didn't come the night of the Ace fire.

That same system, brought a second snow storm, to our Kansas kids.
Lots more snow and strong winds.

Our daughter sent these pictures.  As she said, "Nature made her own snowballs."
The wind blew that hard!

And, we spent some time here.  Locals will recognize this garden center on
South Congress.

Now....more garden work is under way here.
Stay tuned...

It never ends.

Hope you had a great week.
And, have a wonderful weekend.

Happy Gardening...

Wine and Wildflowers...2012....

April in the Texas Hill Country, means wildflowers and the
Wine and Wildflower Tour.

We did a marathon tour, last year, with our friends, Mike and Jorj.
This year we cut it WAY back.

Mike had been in San Antonio all week, working.  Jorj was with him.
We went down one day, to show her the missions.

We got up on Saturday morning, sat around with coffee, then went to breakfast.

After breakfast, we headed over to Driftwood, TX, and the Duchman Family Winery.

This used to be Mandola winery.  The vinyard is quite large, and in a lovely place.

The view across it is serene on a spring morning.

There is an upscale restaurant there.
Trattoria Lisina
It's very good quality Italian.

And, they have a beautiful garden, filled with native and adapted plants.
I always like to walk around this garden.  This year it's looking especially nice.

Being right after breakfast, we opted not to do a tasting.

So, we drove around a bit.  Dropped by Kings Feed, so they could get a big
Talavera pot.

Then back to the house to pick up the picnic basket, and head out again.

Just down the road a bit, to
Driftwood Estate Winery.

I've taken you to Driftwood Winery before.

The wildflowers are looking good, this year.

Everyone was patient, and let me jump out and get a few shots.

Calylophus

Chocolate Daisy?

Don't you love these?  Wild Foxglove.

The butterflies were swarming around.

Not sure which I liked more....the flowers or the butterflies.

We headed on up the hill, to the winery.
Jorj and I found a table, while the guys went in for some wine.

The afternoon was lovely.  The sky was a bit overcast, and there was a little breeze.

There were wildflowers, just over the edge of the wall.

We could see some workers, out in the vinyard.

A closer look and it seems they must have been weeding.  I believe I know how they feel...
on a much smaller scale, of course.

We had a great time.  Not the marathon of last year but,
good friends, good wine,
and a good time.

'Til Later...
