I like to give names, to areas around the Patchwork Garden. The area above, is the Deer Grove. It’s a treed area, where the deer like to hang out.
Behind our neighbor’s fence, is Elli’s Meadow. It has more sun, and more wildflowers popping up. The rain we had all winter, has made them all very happy. There were not this many, last year.
Lots of Prairie Verbena, and the little yellow blooms of the clover. Clover is trying to take over our world here.
Last fall, I threw a package of Bluebonnet seeds, into Elli’s Meadow. I forgot to do the ‘scarifying’ thing…roughing up the seed, to make it easier for moisture to get inside. But, the hard winter helped…freeze and thaw and lots of rain. Five little plants showed up. And, one is now trying to bloom.
Little Wind-Flowers, Anemone heterophylla, have been blooming a while. There is pink…..
….and white….
…purple….
…and blue.
There are a lot of these Wild Onions, Allium canadese.
And, Wild Garlic, Allium Drummondii.
There are lots more things coming up, out there. I’ll post some pictures again, when they bloom. I think I might need help finding out what some are.
Right now, though, this is the biggest bloomer……the oak trees. The pollen piles up fast.
I sweep it away from the door, several times a day. I’m trying to keep little white, furry feet from bringing it inside. It’s a losing battle.
We’re enjoying Spring, here. I hope you are, there…..wherever you are.
I absolutely love your meadows and the names you have given them are perfect. Your Deer Meadow is exactly what I have envisioned for a sloping hillside just out my back door. Now if I could just figure out how to do a cut and paste here everything would be perfect.
ReplyDeleteHappy Spring!

ReplyDelete*Well crud. I accidentally double posted then tried to delete the extra and think I deleted them both. Of course in the end you may just end up with three comments clogging up the works. My oops, sorry. :-(

Happy Spring!
Hi Linda. I love how you are adding the meadows near you. To have Bluebonnets as a native plant would be terrific. I love the blue blooms. Spring is really starting to pop now. Oh, those Oak blooms can be such a nuisance. I bet those little paws do drag them indoors.
ReplyDeleteI especially enjoy groves of trees. Living in Arizona, any place that offers shade in the summer is a welcome treat :-)
ReplyDeleteWe're dealing with piles and clouds of oak pollen too. Amazing how much there is.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great tour, Linda. I always like getting the long shots to get a real feel of the garden and the area around it. Love your wildflowers - you have such a nice collection of them. It's so nice to have so many this year, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteHi, Everyone...
ReplyDeleteLeSan...I've done the same thing..no problem.
The wildflowers are wonderful, this year. More and more are coming out. I wonder how easy it might be to transplant some.
And, we've never lived under these oaks before. The first time I saw the pollen last year, I thought it was sawdust...then looked closer. But, last year was nowhere near as bad as this year. I hope it's over, soon.
But, having these trees is worth it.
I would probably spend hours walking around in the grove just looking to see what was blooming. It is such a pretty scene. No wonder your deer like this spot. I'll bet next year you will have loads of bluebonnets. Some will be just waiting in the wings in case the ones that grew this year didn't make it. They are pretty darned hardy, as you see over at my garden. I never realized there was a difference between the garlic and the onion. I have both and even a few where they shouldn't be. I like the pink one best and prairie verbena-very prolific this year.
ReplyDeleteAs to the oak pollen- it's in my house because we have had the windows open every day.
Your garden helper looks adorable!
ReplyDeleteHi Linda, I'm late in commenting, have been out of town, but wanted to say how much I enjoyed seeing your grove and meadow and wildflowers. Thanks for sharing them. I've never seen the blue anemones, will have to start looking more carefully.
ReplyDeleteJenny~~You're right about spending time in the grove, trying to figure out what all the plants are. Hard to tell, until they bloom. I'm planning on throwing out more bluebonnet seeds this year. And, maybe some other wildflower seeds.
ReplyDeleteDirty Girl~~That little helper is cute...UNLESS she's pulling up what I just planted. Then, she's not so cute. We're working things out.
Kathleen~~Hope your trip was for fun. The anemones only last a day. We had a lot of them, for a while. They're slowing down now. But, other things are showing up.
