Welcome to Spring

The calendar says it’s Spring.
Around here, we seemed to have gone from late winter,
straight to Summer.

We had one morning low last week at 30 degrees,
and the last few days highs near 90.

Welcome to Spring in Texas.

The Spring Leaf Clean Up is about to begin,
when the Live Oak trees drop their old leaves,
and put on new ones.

The pansies are still blooming. If this heat keeps up,
they’ll begin to wane.

The Snapdragons are finally starting to bloom.
Almost too late. I’m thinking they prefer cooler weather.

My neighbor, Ellie’s Viburnum is blooming.
I didn’t get these limbs peeking through the fence,
trimmed back. Now I’m glad I didn’t.
It’ll have to be done though, after the bloom is over.

There are little fruits, on the Elaeagnus.
We’ve seldom seen these, even though we notice the tiny blooms.

The white Cemetery Iris has been blooming a lot.
There are buds on other colors. All Pass-Alongs.
The ones I bought, have not done well for the second year now.

Inland Sea Oats are spreading, just as I wanted.
The ones all over the rest of the yard, were not exactly my wishes.
I’ll be moving them around.
The deer don’t bother them. That makes them a favorite plant.

Out in the Deer Grove, another plant the deer don’t bother...
Agarita.
Pretty yellow flowers.
There are supposed to be berries to follow.
I’ve never seen them here.
Maybe something gets them before I see them.

Again in the Deer Grove, these yuccas are colonizing very nicely.
I think they’re Twisted Leaf.
I’m thinking of trying to move a couple to the house.
It would be nice for them to take up some room in a flower bed.
No care...and, deer don’t touch them.

Of course, the weeds keep coming.
This will be fun to clean out.
I tried a little. Ouch!
It’ll take tools and gloves.
I use some kitchen tongs. They usually work.

And, lots more weeds and clean up to come.

But, evenings find us sitting on the porch.
A glass of wine, and conversation.

And, catching a little light in a bottle.

Life is good.

Weeds and all.

Happy Gardening...

Summertime Blues....

It's been HOT here.
And, dry.

But, there is still squirrel patrol.

But, she just never can catch them...

That's a good thing.

'Tis the Season....

Leaf Season.

There is a lot of beautiful fall color here, this year.
Maybe it's because of the early cold weather we've had.

This Oak is out by the Veggie Garden.
The sun through the leaves yesterday, made me grab my
camera and make this my
365 Project Photo of the Day.

I think it's a Spanish Oak.

Then, there's this.

I love the trees, but.....

Keep in mind....I swept these up yesterday...twice.
Looks like it'll be twice today, too.

I have to do that, so the inside of the house doesn't look like this.
And, the driveway is just as bad.

half a pile
We're past the 'seed stage'.  So, I can put these in the flower beds, for mulch.

Some 'people' just like to lay around,
watching other people do all the work.

April....Already?....

We moved out of March.

March was busy, here.

Beautiful days.
Which means....no rain.

Glad to have plants that can handle some dry.

We enjoyed a visit to the winery, to pick up our 'shipment'.
If you join Driftwood Estate Winery's Spur Club,
you promise to buy a package of wine, every quarter.
Tough job....but, someone has to do it.

Miss Maggie made it to the beauty parlor.
We found a new groomer, and we really like her.
A dog needs to look good, when she's chasing squirrels.

We had a visit from these guys, again.
Another deer down.

We took a break from cleaning up, pruning back, and hauling rocks, dirt, and mulch,
to meet up with some friends, in Mississippi.

And, came home to more work.

Leaves!
Lots and lots of leaves.

The Live Oaks dropped most of their leaves, while we were gone.

So, raking and hauling ensued.
With more to come.

The weatherman says we have a good chance for rain, this weekend.
I sure hope he's right, this time.

So, I'll be donning my Spring fashions,
and getting more work done in the garden.

A garden is never 'done'.

Wide Shot for Foliage Follow-Up...

I am way behind posting on here.

I'm late posting the
Wide Shot,
to share with Heather at

But, since most of this garden is foliage,
I'll combine the Wide Shot with
Foliage Follow-Up, with

This winter, has made a mess of some plants, like this Sago Palm.
There's still some green, so hoping it'll perk up with new growth.

The same for this Foxtail Fern, on the porch.
I've left the frozen parts, for protection.  But, I think it's about time
to get them outta there.

There are some places on this Golden Barrel, that look a bit bad.
But, it's still firm.  This poor thing was under water, for about six hours,
when we had the Halloween Flood.
Along with the cold, I'm surprised it looks this good.

Other things look almost un-touched by Winter.

This 'prickly pear' could be the wave of the future,
in Central Texas gardens.
The Rosemary and Mexican Feathergrass, have held up really well.

We replaced the Color Guard Yuccas that had either washed away,
or been messed with, by the deer.  Deer love to pull things up.
That's why we have old tomato cages over these.

I found a Sotol at Natural Gardener, on sale.
The girl said it just had 'cosmetic damage'.
Hope she was right.  There was only ONE good root, when
we planted this.  Then, it blew over, with our 40 mph wind, after this photo.
Now, it also has a tomato cage.

The pansies are doing really well.

And, the Rose Jasmine has been blooming.

We got a new bird bath, that we nestled in a Gold Dust Acuba.
I like the colors together.

And, another bird feeder.  It's been getting a lot of business.

These bags say 'mulch' on the back.
But, these are 2 cubic foot bags of garden soil.
We spread 20 of them...along with some bags of compost.
Whew!

I'm hoping that Spring will really arrive soon, and I can stop taking
these in and out of the garage.

And, finally...
guess who needs to go to the beauty parlor.
It's been too long.

That's what's going on here.
Be sure to visit Heather and Pam, for more good gardens.

And, oh...

Can anyone tell me what this is?
There are several coming up.  I'd say Texas Persimmon.  But, these have been green all winter.
Texas Persimmon doesn't stay green....the mature trees, anyway.
The acorn is to show the size of the leaf.

Hope you're having a good weekend.

Angels...

Like children....

.....this is when they're most like angels.

Don't be fooled, though.  Note the perked ears.

It's cool.  But, the sun's out.
Time to get out there and do more work.

Happy Gardening...

Wonder Why...

We have one Texas Persimmon.  It's along the fence line, inside the fenced yard.
This year it is FULL of fruit.  Even after the hard winter, and this horrible summer.  The limbs are so full, some are bending down toward the ground.

The ones on the golf course seem to have very little fruit.

The birds love them, when they're ripe.  They turn black.
Maggie thinks they're pretty good, too.  We try to get them off the ground before she does.  Black whiskers are not so attactive, on a white dog.

Wonder why this year there are so many.

Have a good weekend.

Stay cool....pray for rain.

Garden Bloggers Bloomday plus one November 2009

So, here I am a day late with my Bloomday post.  My daddy always said I was a day late and a dollar short.  That would be me.  And....I start off with something that isn't even a bloom.  But, you have to admit, these leaves are quite pretty.  Those trees are along the creek that runs behind and beside our house.  A view from the guest room and our bathroom.

So, I guess I better show you some 'blooms'.  There are the old standbys.

Begonia

Bouganvillea

Indigo Spires Salvia

Purple Heart with ornamental sweet potato...and the ever present elm leaves.

Plumbago

The pink Turq's Cap is in the ground, and has put on some new blooms.

This basket of Impatients a disappointment all summer.  I could not get it to bloom, and it looked like it was dying.  So, I set it to the side and forgot about it.  Now, it's blooming its heart out and hanging in the Texas Persimmon tree.  Just in time for our expected first freeze.  I'll take it down and protect it.

And, this Kolanchoe that my neighbor gave us last year, has just set around all summer.  Now, it has buds on it.  Another one to protect.

I put some yellow violas in the window box on the shelf outside the kitchen window.

And, some more beside the rock drain/stream, along with some of theses Dianthus.

I OHed and AHed so much over the Thryallis at the Inside Austin Garden Tour last month, that my son and his family gave me one for my birthday.

I love this plant.

Another one that I saw these at one of the houses on the tour.  It's Plectanthus Mona.  I think it might have to be protected, so I haven't planted it, yet.

Some other things haven't made it into the ground, yet.  I have to dig beds for some of them.

Blackfoot daisy

Orange Esparanza...the yellow will be moved inside the fence with it.  I'm tired of it being 'trimmed' by the deer.  The orange one I got back in the spring, is living in my daughter-in-law's garden...away from the deer.

Heuchera....not sure what variety.  The tag just said heuchera.

The sign said 'asters'....but, I think these are Narrow Leaf Zinnias.  I know it's at the end of their season, but maybe I can keep them going until I can get some seed for next year.

There are other things blooming...some periwinkles, and autumn sage and yellow lantana. And, some things are looking good in the veggie garden.  I'll need to protect some of that stuff, too.

And, I got this pretty pink, ruffly Cyclamen to put on the porch.  That's our neighbor's cat, Willow, checking things out.

I've been getting lots of garden help, lately.

Thanks to Carol at May Dreams Garden for putting Bloomday together.

Hope you had a great Garden Bloggers Bloomday.
